ACCOMPLISHMENTS

    • Councilmember Nehring has consistency voted against property tax increases and has instead proposed balanced budgets without raising

      taxes.

    • Councilmember Nehring worked with his colleagues to build up the county’s rainy-day fund from $25k when he first came into office to $13.9 million currently.

    • Councilmember Nehring co-sponsored legislation to move the county to a biennial budgeting process; this allows for more fiscally conservative budgeting, better long-term planning, and increased efficiencies.

    • Councilmember Nehring has consistently prioritized law enforcement funding and blocked efforts by activists to defund the police.

    • Councilmember Nehring worked with the cities of Arlington and Marysville to establish the North County law enforcement-embedded social worker program, creating teams of police officers and social workers to connect individuals who are homeless and battling a drug addiction with services while holding criminals accountable.

    • Councilmember Nehring sponsored legislation to outlaw the siting of heroin injection sites in Snohomish County.

    • Councilmember Nehring sponsored legislation to create a “chronic nuisance” code, giving law enforcement and environmental health staff the tools they need to clean up nuisance properties which have been plagued by squatters, drugs, and hazardous waste.

    • Councilmember Nehring has supported capital investments for treatment facilities, including the Diversion Center, the Carnegie Resource Center, the SUD Treatment Center, the Holman Recovery Center, and more.

    • Councilmember Nehring sponsored legislation to require that the county track success metrics for those being connected with services such as housing, treatment, job training, etc.

    • Councilmember Nehring sponsored legislation to require that the county regularly test supportive housing facilities for the presence of methamphetamine and other dangerous drugs following multiple reports of contamination.

    • Councilmember Nehring brought together stakeholders from education, labor, and industry to found the Regional Apprenticeship Pathways (RAP) Program, bringing training in the skilled trades back into the high school. This program is now being used as a statewide model and serves 75 high school students per year in preparing them for successful futures in the skilled trades.

    • Councilmember Nehring voted to support the establishment of passenger air service at Paine Field Airport.

    • Councilmember Nehring worked with other county, city, and business leaders to market the Cascade Industrial Center for innovation and family-wage job growth.

    • Councilmember Nehring helped to secure nearly $30 million in state and federal funding for local broadband projects, including the infrastructure project to run high-speed fiber along SR-530 from Arlington to Darrington.

    • Councilmember Nehring serves as the Chair of the Conservation Futures Program Advisory Board and has helped secure $17.7 million to preserve open space, agricultural, and timber land throughout Snohomish County.

    • Councilmember Nehring sponsored legislation to preserve large tracts of rural farmland from development.

    • Councilmember Nehring led the effort to make the Evergreen State Fairgrounds a “zero waste” fairground.

    • Councilmember Nehring hosted an “Opening Doors to Home Ownership” panel series in Council Committee, bringing in experts from around the region to inform the county on steps to address the rising cost of housing. As a result, multiple pieces of legislation have been adopted to streamline the process and remove barriers to housing affordability at the local government level.

    • Councilmember Nehring has sponsored multiple pieces of legislation to increase flexibility for property owners to build ADU’s (commonly referred to as “mother-in-law apartments”) on their property.

    • Councilmember Nehring sponsored legislation for “missing middle” housing to allow for more home ownership opportunities through diverse types of housing.

    • Councilmember Nehring has opposed efforts from King County and others to take away local control from Snohomish County in setting our own housing and land use policies based on what our citizens want.

    • Councilmember Nehring co-founded the SWISS Regional Partnership, bringing together county leaders from Snohomish, Whatcom, Island, Skagit, and San Juan Counties to collaborate on common issues.

    • Councilmember Nehring has been a longtime member of the Washington State Association of Counties’ Board of Directors, currently serving as the Western Regional Representative.

    • Councilmember Nehring is a member of the National Association of Counties and is a graduate of NACO’s “High Performance Leadership Program.”

    • Councilmember Nehring co-founded The Building Bridges Project to promote civil discourse and respectful dialogue in our increasingly polarized political climate.

    • Councilmember Nehring has been featured as a keynote speaker by organizations such as the Association of Washington Business, local Chambers of Commerce and Rotary clubs, and local schools to promote civil discourse and finding common ground.

    • Councilmember Nehring co-founded “Civic Education Day”, an annual event where high school students throughout the county visit the Snohomish County campus to learn more about local government and how they can get involved.
